PURE FOOD WATCH - August 2011
Floyd L. Cranmer Jr.
WHO CAN WE TRUST?
It is a sad state of affairs when we come to the realization that we can no longer trust, the federal agencies, namely the FDA and the USDA that were established to protect the consumer. Dr. Mercola, who publishes a popular health letter, recently confirmed my opinion by stating that the chief role of the FDA is that of protecting corporate profits rather than ensuring food safety. The offices of these agencies are now staffed with puppet candidates, who allow big agri-business a free hand to dispense their poisons on us and to keep us in the dark as to what is in out foods. Concerning food safety, the FDA is spending its efforts raiding Amish farms for selling healthy raw milk and trying to control the sale of supplements, to protect the profits of the drug companies; while intentionally closing its eyes to the potential dangers of Monsanto’s genetically engineered madness, and the USDA is following in their footsteps.
The USDA has recently announced that the approval of Monsanto’s genetically modified sweet corn that produces the insecticide Bt toxin. Although Monsanto’s Bt corn and cotton has been used mostly in animal feed and highly processed ingredients, the Bt toxin has been found in the blood of pregnant women and fetuses. In addition Bt crops have proven deadly for grazing animals from livestock to monarch butterflies.
Monsanto’s new sweet corn is also “Roundup Ready”, so that the plant can tolerate unlimited amounts of Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup. In addition to causing up to 40 some plant and soil diseases, Roundup causes endocrine disruption, damage to DNA, reproductive and developmental toxicity, and cancer as well as birth defects. Do profits justify these risks to our future generations?
The USDA’s answer to these safety concerns is to allow these the crops to be unregulated and unlabeled. Let the Buyer Beware!
In another move by the USDA, it has approved a GM grass seed by Scotts Miracle-Gro, which is also Roundup Ready. Again the product will be unlabeled and unregulated and will allow homeowners to douse their lawns with Roundup, killing everything but the Kentucky Blue Grass. Its overuse will dramatically increase the spread of Roundup-resistant superweeds, requiring the use of even more toxic herbicides. This will not only contaminate the soil, but the runoff will pollute the streams and waterways. Agriculture secretary Vilsack, who is a leading advocate for genetic engineering, has acknowledged that the GM bluegrass will contaminate non-GM bluegrass and destroy markets in the process, but suggested that they could try to minimize cross-contamination, but this has not been successful with other GM crops.
Please call or write your congressman and senators and protest the approval of these two dangerous unregulated products. Tell Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to stop forcing dangerous Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) on farmers and consumers worldwide.
