PURE FOOD WATCH - October 2012
35 $ MILLION TO KEEP US IN THE DARK
On Oct 18th, the Organic Consumers Association delivered a petition with 203,000 signatures, to the White House addressed to First Lady Michelle Obama calling on the First Lady to press her husband to keep the promise he made in 2007 to have genetically modified (GMO) food labeled, when he said: “We’ll let folks know whether their food had been genetically modified because Americans should know what they’re buying.”
It has been reported that President Obama and Gov. Romney both have a diet of organic food. There are now sixty-one countries that require labels on genetically engineered food. This includes most of Europe and Japan. India will join the list in 2013.
With over 90% of Americans in favor of labeling GMOs, it is indeed sad to see that the USA is not included, and continues to keep its citizens in the dark as to what they are eating. This is an area that we should be a leader, pointing the way to healthy foods and freedom of information. Unfortunately Monsanto has its foxes in the hen house (the FDA and USDA) and it is obvious that many of our congressmen and senators are now indebted to the bio-tech corporations and large agri-businesses.
$35 million in TV ads paid for by Monsanto et al have been spewing out lies and negative information urging California voters to vote no for Proposition 37, which would require GMOs to be labeled in the state. Polls indicate that this has narrowed the lead of the Yes position on the 37 campaign, but hopefully the Californians will fight for their Right to Know.
Before you vote this November, find out the position of the candidates on labeling GMOS.
